I went to see my lovely Auntie in Croydon last Sunday, a
journey I’ve made repeatedly this summer. I quickly began to realise just how much I’ve been away
from home this year through my growing astonishment at how much things are changing in
the area – and especially how fast.
As I got off the bus, there was a
guy in the process of painting Popeye and the next day I went to see the
result. I also wanted to take pics of all the street art and markers of regeneration
that I’d mentally gathered in my mind on all those trips to my Auntie’s over
the past few weeks. I’m still working through my thoughts in relation to the
debates on regeneration vs gentrification, but many of the images speak for
themselves. I can't quite believe how different my hometown looks and I guess I'm just worried about how inclusive all this change will be for the people who live in Croydon, or whether we'll begin to see the early stages of displacement occurring (if it hasn't started happening already).
Some of these were taken in the pouring rain and I was often balancing my camera precariously (and stressfully) underneath my umbrella...ahh the things I do in the name of research! Also, they irritatingly haven't uploaded in chronological order that I took them in but I'm too tired to sort it out...you get the gist.
